They were packed wall-to-wall this evening as the doors opened to the Obama headquarters in downtown Toledo. Hundreds of people were all eager to get on board the Obama wagon for the March 4th pimary here in Ohio. It was good to see old friends again, folks with whom my wife and I worked back in '04 at the Kerry Headquarters.
Several speakers pumped up the crowd telling them how to get involved in the 3-week blitz. This Saturday at 10 AM as well as 2 PM supporters are asked to come down to headquarters for some get-out-the-vote information. Door-to-door is the primary method, although for those who cannot do that they will provide a list of phone numbers to call. As many workers are from out of state, they are also looking for folks who can spare a bed for these 3 weeks. We did it for 3 months in '04 and it was an enjoyable experience.
If you missed the meeting but want more information here are the facts:

What a rebel you are!
...of course! Always have, always will be. I should have lived in Colonial America in the 1700's. What fun!!
The Obama campaign looks to have a big job in the next few days in Ohio.
Hillary has a very big polling lead.
I think the Obama campaign is bordering on phenomena. He certainly has captured the imagination of the public here. Two weeks ago, if you mentioned him, you would get blank stares. The political pundits here who try to analyze American politics all viewed him as an upstart threat to the inevitable ascendecy of Hillary.
Yesterday, I was at my dentists office in the Ville de Vergt, in the center of the Dordogne, and he was raving about Barack Obama as he cleaned my teeth!
A world-wide phenomenon. My wife and I are sharing out upstairs for the next two weeks with two young men who drove to Toledo from Massachusetts to work for Obama, arriving at 1 AM. They are fine, bright guys who believe in his cause.
The Hillary numbers will close quickly as the phenomenon moves through Ohio.
Ever since I posted this article, my sitemeter indicates that 20+ people/day have used a Google search to find 'Obama in Ohio.'
There is a hunger out there.
Electing Obama is a symbol that this country has truly discovered that fear is our worst enemy. (What else do you think has been at the core of racism all these years?) The fear of Conservatives is an admission that there is nothing out there that can possibly make our lives better, and all we can do is fight to keep things the way they are. It's no surprise that those that have benefitted from this system are defending it. I don't blame them for being hesitant to accept every new idea comes along. We've been burned before. The revolutionary thinkers (e.g., Jesus, MLK, Bishop Tutu, Ang Soo Chi, etc.) that champion concepts like "peace", "love", "sharing", and "charity" are always shadowed by pretenders that will kill them and take over, once the majority votes them in. New ideas have to be "circular" (like rock/paper/scissors) so that no one entity has unchallengeable power. That mistrust is what a classic conservativism does best, and it's a valuable social service that only someone with a memory of past failures can provide. Idealism without sadness is hollow. That's what they worry about with Barack; is there enough sadness (AKA "experience") in his background? I'm betting you get called "nigger" by one person and that's enough to sour a normal person for life. He survived it and continues to love people. It shows!
Barack is too much of a gentleman to mention Bill Clinton's pardons at the end of his administration, the Arkansas partnership with WalMart on uncontrolled international trade (NAFTA), the illicit fund-raising schemes, the Cayman Island banking practices, and all the other examples of less than exemplary behavior. If Hillary is going to take credit for what went right, she should also have to answer for the negatives. (You know that she knew.) McCain is going to have a field day with Hillary. It is going to be so dirty.
